Season storyline: Quinn Priester rejoins Pirates

Quinn Priester makes MLB return Former top prospect called up to majors following injury to Marco Gonzales   The Pittsburgh Pirates’ rotation to start the year he been a welcome surprise. Between Martin Perez holding a 2.55 earned run average (ERA) and Jared Jones setting the baseball world on fire to start his career, the rotation has kept them in most games this season. After Marco Gonzales landed on the injured list because of a left forearm muscle strain, Quinn Priester will be the next man up to continue the success. Priester’s first major league stint was not what Pirates’ fans had been hoping for. The former top prospect had lost some of his velocity and his good breaking stuff was not enough to make up for a fastball that was too hittable. The strikeouts were also not enough to make up for how hard he was getting hit in 2023. Albeit in a small sample size, Priester may be on the verge of a resurgence after working on those problems. After being drafted at ...

The BSR Mission

The BSR Mission

By Aidan Treu

The goal is to provide input and new ideas to the Pittsburgh sports landscape through a variety of different forms of content while fostering a positive community and discussion.

What to expect

On-season content will consist primarily of season storylines, player highlights, prospect highlights and mock trades. Off-season content will focus on potential team acquisitions, draft profiles and the free agency cycle with the timing of each post varying between MLB and the NFL's differing schedules.

Sports discourse is better when there is healthy debate.  Stories will be written with the intention of starting discussion. I will be sharing my own opinions but I would also love to see if and why readers disagree in the comments.

Season storylines

If a player or the team is coming close to breaking a record or achieving something not seen everyday, the storyline will be explained and given context so readers can follow along themselves.

Player highlights and prospect highlights

Stories focusing on individual players will include basic stats, available analytics, projections, grades and opinions on whether they will have a successful future with the Pirates or Steelers.

Mock trades and potential team acquisitions

These stories will analyze players, coaches and staff who could fill holes on the Pirates' and Steelers' current rosters or be beneficial to the future of either team.

Draft profiles

Draft profiles will follow college or high school athletes who may be a good fit in Pittsburgh or are generally intriguing prospects. Depending on the time of year, these stories will include stats, athletic profiles and available analytics. They will also be more focused on player talent and the best players available than articles about free agents.

Free agency cycle

These stories will be similar to draft profiles and potential team acquisitions but based more on team needs than the former and involve news about prospective players going to other teams as opposed to the ladder.

Open discussion

If enough ideas are shared in reaction to BSR posts of any type, there will be follow-up stories sharing community responses with differing opinions about how the teams should be handled and what moves they should make.

Season storyline: Andrew McCutchen hits career home run No. 300

Cutch enters rare air as fourth player to hit 300th homer with Pittsburgh Andrew McCutchen blasted his 300 th home run against the Phillies on Sunday By Aidan Treu   Andrew McCutchen sat at 299 home runs coming into the 2024 season. The Pittsburgh Pirates’ legend tried to put the milestone out of his mind to stay focused, but everyone was thinking about it. Prior to this year three players had clubbed home run number 300 with the Pirates. All it took was a beautiful day in Philadelphia and an already sizeable Pirates’ lead for Cutch to join the party. McCutchen joins All-time Pirates’ greats Willie Stargell and Ralph Kiner having completed the feat. The other player, Jeromy Burnitz, did so in his swan song season in 2006, his only career season with the Bucs. Stargell (475) and Kiner (301) remain the only two players to have at least 300 home runs with the Pirates. Between his earlier tenure with Pittsburgh and his recent return, McCutchen has 216 homers with the...

Steelers hire Arthur Smith as OC: What should you expect?

Former head coach, offensive coordinator and offensive line coach Arthur Smith is set to join the Black and Gold for the 2024-25 season By Aidan Treu   It is no secret Arthur Smith did not light up the league during his head coaching tenure with the Falcons. Social media would be quick to point that out, though he may be a better fit than many think. The most frequent criticism of the Steelers' new OC was inconsistency in getting his top playmakers the ball. In some situations this was the case, but it is not entirely true. Bijan Robinson was his star, a running back picked top-10. The narrative was set that he didn't touch the ball enough. This is overlooking his finish within the top-10 of rushing plus receiving yards at 1,463. Another criticism was Drake London's lack of involvement. London quietly finished the year just outside the top-32 in receiving yards with 905, but that is besides the point. Much of these criticisms can be somewhat put to bed when looking at his ...

Prospect highlight: Termarr Johnson

Termarr Johnson opens season in A-ball Pirate’s second base prospect begins year in High-A Greensboro By Aidan Treu   Termarr Johnson, the Pirates’ top hitting prospect, will begin the 2024 season with the Greensboro Grasshoppers with his sights set on a promotion to AA Altoona. After putting up an .820 on base plus slugging percentage (OPS) between low-A Bradenton and High-A Greensboro a year ago, he will return to the Grasshoppers’ hitter friendly ballpark. The second baseman has been universally lauded for his hit-tool, while his power has also taken a jump since he was drafted. MLB pipeline referred to Johnson as, “a potential No. 1 overall choice because he might be the best pure prep hitter in decades,” before the 2022 draft, and that he could be “a 25-30 homer threat in the big leagues.” While his bat to ball skills have not led to otherworldly contact numbers, as evidenced by his .240 career minor league batting average, the second baseman is getting on bas...
